Hotel Building Collapses in Taiwan After Earthquake

The powerful 6.4-magnitude tremor struck at 23:50 (15:50 GMT) about 20km (12 miles) off the island's east coast.

Four buildings have collapsed and one bridge has been damaged, Taiwan's National Fire Agency told ABC News.

Rescuers are trying to free people from a partially collapsed hotel and residential building, officials say.

A 6.4 magnitude quake struck just off the coast of Taiwan late Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Rescue teams are responding to the area and people are believed to be trapped in the hotel.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen tweeted Tuesday: "Major 6.4 natural disaster in #Hualien".

Taiwan lies along the famed "Pacific Rim of Fire" known for seismic activity from Alaska to Southeast Asia. The video shows people gathering near the building and shining flashlights on windows.

The USGS reports that the magnitude 6.4 quake struck 21km north of the city of Hualien at 2:50AM AEDT, at a shallow 9.5km below the surface.

Reports continue to come in of other damage registered to buildings and infrastructure.

The safety of the building was called into question immediately after the disaster, when metal cans and foam were found to have been used as fillers in the concrete and residents said there had been cracks in the structure.
