Richardson Police say the officer was working a call at an apartment complex when the shooting occurred.

"It's the hardest day we've ever had", Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said in a Thursday press conference. "We've got an officer deceased and we've got a suspect in custody", Tilley said.

A Dallas police report says he was taken to a mental health facility past year after threatening to jump off a bridge and telling officers that he wanted to be taken to a doctor and "put to sleep permanently", according to KTVT-TV in Dallas. He was a 13-year veteran and member of the SWAT unit.

The Richardson officer was the second law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty this week. This is the first police officer death in Texas this year.

Spivey said he couldn't answer any questions about the suspect or the shooting investigation and referred all questions to Plano police. We're not doing well.

Richardson Police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich said the fallen officer was rushed to Medical City Plano, where he was pronounced dead.

He has a history of drug possession charges.

Texas Governor Gregg Abbott responded on Twitter writing, "The hearts and soul of Texas mourn with you. It is an emotionally trying, traumatic day, but they're out there doing the things they do best serving this community". At this point, Plano detectives are still building the case to piece together the timeline and details of the events.
