Toys R Us jump starts closures, begins liquidation sales

NJ.com reported that Toys R Us laid off about 15 percent of its headquarter staff in Wayne, New Jersey previous year. Critics have said the toy chain failed to adequately respond to increased competition from big-box retailers Walmart and Target in physical stores and online from Amazon.

Select Toys "R" Us stores across the United States began offering sales Wednesday amid the liquidation of over 140 stores.

Toys "R" Us to close dozens of stores nationwide; several Bay Area locations in jeopardySale signs went up at the Emeryville location, but at least a dozen stores have been taken off the initial closure list. In Georgia, that includes stores in Alpharetta, Albany, Stonecrest, Douglasville, Dunwoody, Fayetteville and Newnan.

The toy chain announced last month that it planned to close 182 stores, about one-fifth of its us locations. The starting discounts are up to 30 percent off.

Furniture and fixtures in the stores will also be for sale. Closing locations will continue to honor customer programs including gift cards, Endless Earnings and credit card specials.
