At least 18 killed, 62 injured after bus overturns in Hong Kong

Nineteen people were killed and more than 60 injured February 10 when a Hong Kong bus packed with passengers heading home from a day at the races crashed, the South China Morning Post reported.

Many early reports of the incident claimed only 18 people were killed in the crash; later accounts increased the number to 19.

According to the South China Morning Post, fifteen men and three women were confirmed dead at the scene, while 61 injured passengers were rushed to 12 public hospitals across the city.

Forty-seven other passengers were injured in the accident.

Authorities said 10 of the injured were in critical condition and 15 were seriously wounded.

"It was much faster than I normally felt in a bus", he said, sitting by the road.

Saturday's crash appears to be the worst since a double-decker bus fell off an elevated roadway in 2003, killing 21 people.

The driver had been with the company since 2014 and was familiar with the route on which the accident happened.

A company executive also said $HK80,000 (NZ$14,100) would be paid to the families of each victim.

Such an accident is seen as very rare in Hong Kong.
