An off-duty Chicago police officer was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while responding to a robbery, the Chicago Tribune reported. Bauer was shot several times, Johnson said.

Police radioed about a suspect who started running from tactical officers who attempted to stop him for questioning. The man physically fought with the officers and fled, according to Johnson.

Supt. Eddie Johnson has identified the officer as Paul Bauer.

"It's a hard day for us, but we'll get through it", Johnson told the Chicago Tribune.

Tactical officers were on routine patrol Tuesday and observed an "individual" acting suspiciously around 2:30 p.m.

The shooting occurred at the Thompson Centre, a building in downtown Chicago that hosts government offices.

Johnson said that the 53-year-old commander "saw the offender and engaged in an armed physical confrontation" before the suspect whipped out a gun and fired multiple times. Please take the time to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

The city saw2,785 shooting incidents affecting almost 3,500 victims in 2017, according to police statistics, along with 650 murders.
