"But it is a signal of how very intense the flu season has been".

Crystal Hayden, Chief Nursing Officer, says the hospital is seeing a large volume of school-age children coming in with flu symptoms.

The average flu season lasts 16 weeks, from October through May with a peak in February, but it can stretch up to 20 weeks.

"This one arrived early and continues to spread, leading many people throughout the commonwealth to get sick with a fever and cough or a sore throat". Despite the number of flu cases declining, it's likely widespread flu activity will continue for "some time", the report said.

Caused by viruses, flu is a contagious respiratory illness with mild to severe symptoms that can sometimes lead to death. H3N2, the season's viral strain, is wreaking havoc across the US and other countries like Australia and the U.K. Hospitalizations from flu are at their highest since the CDC started measuring them in 2010. But if you've stopped by the facility recently, the first thing you'd see is a sign saying "stop", warning all who aren't feeling well to stay away.

"It's not uncommon for B strains to increase later in the season", Schuchat said.

But Scotch said students should still get the vaccine because studies show people who are vaccinated have less severe symptoms if they get sick.

It's yet to be seen whether the HMS Sutherland will provoke a response from China, but recent history suggests it's likely. But he said: 'We absolutely support the United States approach on this, we very much support what the USA has been doing'.

Flu activity remains widespread, and it is likely that the season peaked during the week ending January 27, according to health officials. OR and Hawaii, the exceptions, both recorded regional activity for the fifth week of the year. That would top the record 995 cases the state reported the previous week. That ties the highest level seen in the US during swine flu in 2009.

"We do have some pharmacies in the area that will tell us that they are out this week of Tamiflu", said Pittsburgh pediatrician Dr. Patrick Tate.

It's no secret that this year's flu season is bad.

A total of 2,107 specimens for the week were tested for the virus statewide, and only 629 (nearly 30 percent) tested positive, according to the report. More than 13 percent of all deaths that occurred in Honolulu during week four were related to pneumonia or influenza.

"We don't take any chances and if anyone has been exposed to the illness, we encourage them to wear a mask while at the facility", she said.

The Port Orange Police Department said it lost a longtime employee and friend Tuesday due to complications related to the flu. The vaccine is available to anyone who has not yet received a vaccine this flu season.
