In Mexico City, tall buildings swayed for more than a minute as seismic alarms sounded, with older structures in the chic Condesa neighbourhood knocking into each other, and some cracks appearing in plaster and paintwork.

"We're stressed out, we have flashbacks".

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was measured 7.5 on the Richter scale 4 km south of Pinotepa de Don Luis with the epicenter at a depth of 10 km, Xinhua reported.

On the north side of the city, Julia Hernandez said she felt like she was "in a boat" as the ground swayed beneath her feet. "She didn't say anything", Gutierrez said of her granddaughter. When I opened my eyes, I saw her eyes in terror.

Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete said there was some superficial damage to buildings in Oaxaca, and the state's governor said about 100,000 people had lost power.

"Obviously people are afraid", said the emergency response chief for the city of Puebla, Gustavo Ariza.

As per media reports, material damage has been reported as many buildings collapsed near Pinotepa and Santiago Jamiltepec.

Ronaldo makes Champions League history with penalty against PSG
Ronaldo scored two goals, taking his tally to 101 in the Champions League with Real Madrid , 116 in total. This is a bad result, but we can cancel it out in the return leg.

There are no reports on deaths or damages at this point.

The latest tremor comes less than six months after last year's devastating earthquakes in central and southern Mexico.

The Red Cross reported the facade from a building in the Condesa neighborhood, which was hit hard on September. Later Friday, a magnitude 5.8 aftershock hit Oaxaca, the USGS tweeted.

Tremors were felt as far away as Guatemala to the south.

A powerful quake that rattled south and central Mexico caused little apparent destruction but rekindled fears in a population that still sees daily reminders of deadly earthquakes five months ago.

On Sep 7 past year, an 8.2 quake shook the nation and killed 96 people, mostly in the state of Oaxaca.

Mexico sits at a spot where five tectonic plates come together, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.
