State health officials on Friday reported Mississippi's second pediatric flu death of the season.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

While the flu shot doesn't always prevent the flu, it can minimize the symptoms and help folks recover more quickly.

Only pediatric influenza deaths are reportable.

The CDC does not report flu-related deaths.

Past year there were a total of 194 cases for the season (November through June) and the data showed things were on track for a similar number this season.

Rumpf continued: "Also this year, most authorities would agree that the flu seems to have started somewhat earlier". Some experts think this season could continue into March.

The number of states reporting high numbers of patients seeking treatment also fell last week.

A CDC spokeswoman says the virus is still widespread, with half the country experiencing high activity. The hospitalization rate for people 50-64 years was 53.4 per 100,000.

Statewide flu deaths have increased to 161 statewide in the past week. H3N2-predominant seasons have been associated with more severe illness and mortality than H1N1- or B-predominant seasons, especially among older people and young children, Moore said. There have been two pediatric flu deaths this season in CT. The number of reported children's deaths to date probably does not include all cases because of the typical lag time for reporting non-hospital deaths. So far, there have been three deaths reported. There were 43 in the 2015-2016 season, and 297 in the 2014-2015 season.

The 36 percent effectiveness number is just a little below the average vaccine effectiveness for the last 14 years that the CDC has been tracking the vaccine.

In order for children to be protected by their vaccine, they need two shots. Even with partial protection, the vaccine can reduce severity of illness, doctors say.

Health officials said the latest child to die was from central MS, but additional details were not released.
