Undercover investigators were planning to serve an arrest warrant on Hanks at around 7:30 a.m. when they asked the California Highway Patrol for help in stopping his vehicle, Kuey said.

There were initial reports of gunfire reported on the freeway but Officer Kevin Denharder, a CHP spokesman, said there was no evidence of gunshots from officers or the suspect.

A suspect who led California Highway Patrol officers on a pursuit onto the 101 Freeway died of an apparent poisoning.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Hanks was wanted for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old in a LA motel on February 4 after contacting her through Snapchat. The California Highway Patrol told Viel they found that the suspect had fatally poisoned himself.

The CHP pursued the man into Ventura, where he drove toward the right shoulder just north of Seaward Avenue and then veered across all three lanes of the highway before hitting the center divider, KTLA reported.

CHP Investigator Christopher Terry told reporters at the scene that the man apparently drank a liquid poison while driving. The incident began when a check of a vehicle in Oxnard came back with information that the auto belonged to a rape suspect, believed to be a 35-year-old man from Camarillo, CHP officials said. The passenger-side glass was shattered by officers who removed the suspect from the vehicle.

The incident initially closed both directions of the freeway but all southbound lanes have since reopened. Traffic on the northbound side is at a crawl as of 8:31 a.m. Check back for updates and avoid Highway 101 in that area for the time being.
