Snow showers expected for Limerick amid warning of 'exceptionally cold weather'

"There is the potential for locally 5-10 cm of snow across eastern parts however where showers become more organised there may be more widespread snow cover".

The Met Office is predicting highly disruptive snowfall across the country beginning in the South East.

Weather forecasts suggest we could see temperatures that feel as brisk as -8'C.

During Monday and Tuesday, snow showers are expected to move into eastern areas, before spreading westwards across England.

The Beast from the East will blow in high winds and snow for Yorkshire this week.


A spell of bitterly cold weather is set to blast Northern Ireland next week.

The cold weather is part of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming, which refers to a rapid jump in temperatures in the stratosphere, which can then lead to the onset of cold weather.

Met Office forecasters said: "There is a potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays on cancellations to rail or air travel".

"At this stage the development of these shower bands and the exact locations and timing of these is very uncertain".

The local authority says the weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and may disrupt the delivery of services.

Dr Thomas Waite, of Public Health England's Extreme Events team, said: "Remember keeping warm will help keep you well".

"Over 65s, those with conditions like heart and lung diseases and young children, are all at particular risk in cold weather as their bodies struggle to cope when temperatures fall".
