No one was wounded by single shot, which was sacked through a window outside, but the incident resulted in a lockdown at Dalton High School as frightened students and teachers piled desks in front of doors and tried to hide or ran outside, the Times Free Press reports.

A north Georgia high school teacher was arrested on Wednesday after he barricaded himself in a classroom and fired a shot from his handgun out of a window, police said.

Dalton High School Principal Steve Bartoo said he was just outside the classroom of Jesse Randal Davidson on Wednesday morning when he heard the gunshot.

Jesse Randall Davidson, 53, is a social studies teacher in the city of Dalton, Georgia, where he also serves as the play by play announcer for the school's football games.

Only one minor injury was reported on Wednesday - a girl who hurt her ankle while fleeing in the pandemonium, Frazier said.

He faces six charges including aggravated assault; terroristic threats and acts; and having a weapon on school property.

"It's somber. I think people are very grateful".

Under questioning by detectives, Davidson refused to discuss what led to the shooting.

School officials said there are no plans for Davidson to return. "We were all just terrified and running for what we thought was our lives", she said.

Amid all the heated debates around gun control in the United States, the incident in the Dalton High School, Georgia, comes as a sign of things to come if teachers are armed with guns.

A student at the school told NBC News in a phone interview that she was terrified.

"But this one was real", student Wesley Caceres said.

Davidson also said, "Don't come in here, I have a gun".

Bartoo said he sounded agitated and radioed for a school resource officer who was at the middle school at the time.

The incident happened inside of a classroom at Dalton High School located at 1500 Manly Street, Dalton, Ga. School will resume Thursday.

"Our teachers started getting terrified, and we got terrified", Wesley said, adding that he called his mother to tell her he loved her. "He really wanted the students to understand the concept", Zeisig told The Associated Press.

"We had officers inside the building quickly", police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.

Dalton teacher accused of firing a handgun in his classroom had three rifles taken away after setting the family vehicle ablaze at his home two years ago, according to a sheriff's report obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

About 3000 students, many carrying white flowers, wove through hundreds of uniformed police officers to get to class.
