A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was reportedly vandalised in Taliparamba in Kannur district, early on Thursday. "His identity continues to be anonymous", said Vinu Mohan, Kannur SI. He suddenly pulled out the specs and garland on the statue; he slapped the statue. The spectacles of the statue was damaged. Then he walked back and disappeared into the crowd.

Incidents of the toppling of statues have been reported from certain parts of the nation.

The CPM (M) has called it "communist phobia", while the BJP has said that the statue was bulldozed by the people "oppressed" by the Left. The investigating police have ruled out political involvement in the vandalism incident. The statues of Lenin in Tripura and Periyar in Tamil Nadu have been destroyed in the recent days.

The statue, located inside the compound of the Taliparamnba Taluk Office, was vandalised at around 8:30 a.m., according to eyewitnesses.
