Man charged with felony for allegedly stealing Frances McDormand's Oscar

A man who allegedly stole Frances McDormand's Oscar at an Academy Awards afterparty on Sunday has been arrested.

One photographer didn't recognize him as an Oscar victor and followed and confronted him.

It was the second time McDormand had bagged the best actress statuette following her win for "Fargo" 21 years earlier, and her acceptance speech was a highlights of the evening.

Bryant had a ticket to the event and even posted video of himself on Facebook parading the trophy-which like all the golden statues was set to be engraved-as his own.

He was convicted of receiving stolen property in Los Angeles County in 2004 and sentenced to 24 days in jail and three months of probation, online court records show. "They celebrated their reunion with a double cheeseburger from In-N-Out".

Mr Brookman made the comment at a press conference at Los Angeles' Foltz Criminal Justice Centre where Bryant was due to appear. When he was confronted, Bryant handed back the statuette without a fight, police said. "This is mine. We got it tonight, baby!"

Bryant's Instagram account shows him holding trophies from several big awards shows while posing as a victor.

Frances attended the event with her husband Joel Coen. "This is mine. We got it tonight, baby".

The hapless thief remains in police custody on $20,000 bail.

Ms Levy, who said she has known Bryant for seven years, added: "I think we are living in an unusual time in America".

As he spun around in a circle, Bryant solicited congratulations from those around him.
