"The Shape of Water" (2017), the nostalgic outcast love story from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, took home Best Picture and secured del Toro's first Oscar win as Best Director. He said: "I would like to thank my mother, who is older than the Oscars, she is 99 years young next birthday and she's watching the ceremony from the comfort of her sofa".

There was also the first nod in history for a female cinematographer - Rachel Morrison, who shot Dee Rees's racial drama "Mudbound" - although the award ended up going to Roger Deakins on his 14th attempt, for "Blade Runner 2049".

"Coco", which tells a story based on Mexico's iconic cultural tradition, Day of the Dead, also won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
