Club captain Michael Carrick has confirmed that he will bring his 12-year spell at Manchester United to an end in the summer when retiring from playing duties.

The 36-year-old is the longest-serving player at Old Trafford, having joined from Tottenham in 2006 and gone on to win the Champions League and five Premier League titles, among many other trophies.

Carrick said: 'There comes a time when as much as you don't like it, it's time to stop playing football.

The England global has pretty much won it all at domestic level.

Carrick underwent a routine procedure for an irregular heart rhythm this past fall, and thus hasn't been available most of the season.

However, despite their numerical advantage, Rangers were caught cold by a clinical Celtic counter-attack. But the Rangers caretaker boss said: "I'm really confident Alfredo will play with confidence".

"Yes. It's kind of been sorted out", Carrick told his club's official website speaking about the possibility about his joining the coaching staff. We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing to totally confirm as yet. That's where I'm at and you have got to accept it.

"I'm totally fine now, took a bit of time to get over. I've just been training hard and trying to keep fit and have managed to play a few games so far and we'll see what happens towards the end of the season".

The former England global won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup on three occasions during his time at Old Trafford. For two or three days I was thinking am going to carry on playing is it worth it but that passed and I got fit.

During his tenure at United the Newcastle-born midfielder has scored 24 goals and has already been given a testimonial by the club, which took place last June.
