Over the past few years, directors Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler have forged an aspirational bond as two of the most important black filmmakers working in Hollywood today. IMAX screens in China contributed $7.4 million to the $11 million Black Panther grossed just in IMAX theaters this weekend.

The film's opening in China - the world's second biggest market behind the USA - pushed its global total past the $1 billion mark that only 32 other movies have reached. Critics were mostly unimpressed with a 42 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave "Wrinkle" a B CinemaScore.

A Wrinkle in Time is set for release on March 9th in the United States and on March 23rd in the UK and features a cast that includes Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Levi Miller, Andre Holland and Deric McCabe. The film follows a young girl (Reid), her step-brother (Deric McCabe), and a friend (Levi Miller) as they embark on a journey that spans time and space in search of her missing father. Plus, A Wrinkle in Time has already made a name for itself due to the fact that by being hired to direct it, Ava DuVernay is the first woman of color to helm a live action movie with a budget exceeding $100 million. Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time are both sending shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry. Coogler states that, "Ava is inclusion, equity and representation". The big question now how A Wrinkle in Time will perform in the days to come. He noted that Disney has traditionally opened a family film in early March to take advantage of the family demographic, as it did previous year with "Beauty and the Beast" and in 2016 with "Zootopia".

Next weekend sees the release of Tomb Raider, which will certainly shake up the box office once again. That gain comes largely from "Black Panther" and "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle".

The micro-budgeted sequel to "The Strangers" opened to solid success. The family-friendly Peter Rabbit finished in the sixth spot with $6.8 million to bring its five-week total to $93.5 million. MGM's second weekend of "Death Wish" followed in seventh with $6.6 million at 2,882 sites to give the Bruce Willis reboot almost $24 million in 10 days. Well, the movie got off to a decent start last night, making $1.3 million in Thursday previews.

Sony's 12th weekend of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" rounded out the top 10 with $2.7 million at 2,157 sites. It has now gained a domestic total of $562 million, with more than a billion dollars globally.

Unable to break into the Top 10, Nash Edgerton's 'Gringo' played even worse. As a writer and director, she's known for powerhouse, emotional films like Selma - the biopic of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama - as well as 13th, a Netflix documentary that goes into America's prison system to show how racial inequality affects inmates. The actor died at age 26 in a freak accident in 2016.
